OPT allows F-1 visa students (those in the U.S. on a student visa) to work in the U.S. after completing their degree program. The employment must be directly related to the student’s major area of study.Duration: Standard OPT allows up to 12 months of work authorization. However, Students who graduate with a degree in certain STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) can apply for a 24-month extension, providing a total of 36 months of OPT. You can apply for OPT up to 90 days before completing your degree and up to 60 days after graduation. You must have completed a degree in an eligible STEM field (such as computer science, engineering, mathematics, biological sciences, etc.).
